Updating motherboard drivers and the BIOS can improve compatibility with newer hardware.
A motherboard is the central component of any computer. It is the component where the processor, RAM, drives and any add-in cards connect to. Replacing a motherboard is a fairly complex task and is not recommended for beginners. However, you can often improve hardware compatibility and system performance by updating your motherboard's drivers and BIOS.
Instructions
1. Turn on your computer and log in to Windows. Open your Internet browser, and navigate to the home page of your motherboard manufacturer. If you are not sure which motherboard you have, consult your computer's manual or open up the case to find the brand and model number on the board.
2. Download the latest drivers for your motherboard. These driver packages typically include chipset drivers, LAN drivers, Audio drivers and anything else that you might need. Install all of the drivers you need, and restart the computer when prompted.
3. Log in to Windows again. Return to the motherboard manufacturer's Web site. Download the latest BIOS update and the flashing utility for your BIOS.
4. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on updating the system BIOS, and pay close attention to any precautions. Every brand is different, although the process is usually simple with newer computers and can easily be done by running the BIOS setup file within Windows.
