Find which Intel chipset you have on your motherboard.
On occasion, you will need to know what type of Intel chipset is installed on your computer's motherboard. Perhaps you are having technical issues and are working with technical support on the telephone, or you want to install new hardware or software and need to know if it is compatible. When you buy a new computer, the included documentation will list the chipset. However, perhaps the documents have been lost or you are working with a computer you didn't purchase. Fortunately, there are other ways to find this information.
Instructions
Device Manager
1. Click the Windows "Start" icon in the bottom left corner of the screen. Select "Control Panel." Locate the "System" icon in the Control Panel window. In Windows Vista it is sometimes called "System and Maintenance."
2. Double-Click the "System" icon to open the "System" window. Locate the link to "Device Manager." Depending on how Windows is configured, this might be an icon or it might be a text link on the left side of the window.
3. Click "Device Manager" to open the "Device Manager" window. In Windows Vista you will have to have administrator rights to do this.
4. Locate the "System Devices" entry and click the "+" next to the entry to expand the list.
5. Locate the entries that say "Intel." There will likely be several. One or more should state "chipset." This is the chipset version that is present on your motherboard.

6. Navigate in your Web browser to the Intel Chipset Identification Utility download page. Click "Download" to save the utility to your computer.
7. Locate the Intel Chipset Identification Utility file you downloaded. Run the executable file. In Windows Vista you will need administrator privileges. The Chipset Utility Window will open.
8. Locate the chipset currently on your motherboard by viewing the information displayed in the window.
