Remove A Socket 478 Heat Sink With Tension Clips

Remove a Socket 478 heat sink with tension clips.

The Socket 478 configuration was developed by Intel for its Pentium 4 CPU (Central Processing Unit) chips. These chips are the brain of any computer and work best when cool. Heat sinks and fans were developed to sit on top of these CPUs and remove heat from the chip in order to allow it to work more efficiently. These heat sinks are held in place by tension clips. Removing a socket 478 heat sink with tension clips isn't difficult and can be done by even a computer newbie. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Power down your computer system. Unplug it from the wall.

2. Ground yourself by touching a metal object, such as a table leg or standing lamp. This dissipates built-up static electricity in your body, which can harm sensitive electronic components like CPUs.

3. Disconnect any peripherals from your computer to give yourself access to the back panel. Remove any screws holding the cover in place. Lift the cover up and out of the way.

4. Identify the Socket 478 CPU and heat sink. It will be located towards the center of the motherboard. The heat sink may have a fan on top to aid in the cooling process. Disconnect the fan, if present, by pulling apart the plastic electrical connectors that run to the power supply with your hands.

5. Lift the plastic tabs on the two sides of the heat sink up to release them.

6. Lift up on the heat sink to remove.
