The motherboard is the main control unit of your laptop. Without it, your laptop cannot function properly. A motherboard is also known as a system board or mainboard. When an IBM laptop motherboard fails, this doesn't mean you'll have to replace your laptop. The motherboard can be easily replaced.
Instructions
1. Unplug your computer and remove the battery. Most batteries are located either in the side or on the bottom and snap out by pulling on the locks and pulling on the battery. Take the battery out to reduce risk of electric shock or damage to the laptop itself.
2. Unscrew the bottom of the laptop and take it off. Be careful with it. You may have to jiggle it a little to get it to come out. Don't force it if it doesn't want to detach; wiggle it easily until it slides off.
3. Disconnect your modem cable and cable card. You'll want to take these out for protection of the cable card. Also, take out the memory module in the bottom of the laptop. This is for protection of the memory module as well.
4. Locate the hard drive, which is attached to the motherboard. Take out the entire assembly carefully; you don't want to damage the hard drive. Disconnect the hard drive from the old motherboard and connect it to the new motherboard on the same connection modules.
5. Reinstall the motherboard and hard drive assembly, the memory module, the cable card and the modem cable in the same spots on the new motherboard as they were connected to the old motherboard. Replace the battery and put the bottom of the laptop back on. Screw the back of the laptop on again and boot up your laptop to make sure everything's working properly.
