When purchasing a motherboard, a basic input output system (BIOS) chip is installed on the hardware. The BIOS is the first set of instructions run on a computer when you turn on the machine. The BIOS is responsible for the initial control of the hardware, including the configurations of the basic components like processor, hard drive and memory, and helping the PC locate the boot sector to load the operating system. A Phoenix BIOS manufacturer can be identified during setup.
Instructions
1. Turn off the power of the machine. The computer needs to be rebooted in order to view the BIOS information.
2. Turn on the computer and wait until the first boot screen is shown. Usually, a splash screen appears, or an image at the top of the boot screen appears to indicate that the BIOS is loading.
3. Press the "Pause" key on the keyboard. This stops the loading process and allows you to view the information on the boot screen, including the BIOS manufacturer information.
4. Read the information on the screen and search for the Phoenix name. If this name is shown, Phoenix is the manufacturer of the BIOS chipset on the motherboard. Some other manufacturers include Intel, AMI, ASUS and MegaTrend.
5. Take note of the Phoenix BIOS number, date and version. This will help you determine if it's time for you to upgrade the software for the BIOS chipset. Remember to download new drivers for your Phoenix motherboard.
