DDR2 and DDR3 are common types of memory being used in modern computers.
There are several ways to determine which type of RAM modules a particular computer is using. The type of RAM being used in any particular computer is dependent entirely on the RAM slots built into the motherboard and cannot be changed without replacing the entire motherboard. Instructions
1. Read the user manual that came with the motherboard or the computer system to determine whether the manual lists the type and speed of supported memory in a particular system.
2. Launch a Web browser and navigate to the motherboard or computer manufacturer's website to review the specifications listed for the board, including the types of RAM supported. Alternately call technical support on the phone to determine what type of RAM was used in a particular system.
3. Launch a Web browser and navigate to a major memory reseller to scan the computer automatically with specialized software and determine which type of memory it requires.
4. Power down the computer. Remove the case cover and attach an anti-static wrist strap to one arm, while clipping the other end to the chassis. Inspect the installed RAM chips to look for markings on the existing RAM modules which indicate the type, capacity or manufacturer of the modules.
